A close encounter

An encounter with snails can support the science curriculum at
Key Stages 1 and 2.

The children can develop their:

  • investigative skills: KS1 SC2
  • understanding of life processes & living things
    KS1 SC2; KS2 SC2 1 & 2

and many other aspects of the school curriculum can flow from this stimulating experience.

Snail farming can also contribute to the Enterprise and Food Technology elements of Key Stages 3 and 4.

For the Applied Biology curriculum, snails could be the animal the students look after. You can have some baby snails to look after and return them to us at the end of term.

School farms could benefit from including edible snails amongst their livestock. The Mini Snail Farm is a good way for younger children to learn about looking after snails which fit so well with many aspects of the National Curriculum at primary level. For older children where the focus is more on farming, then the Grow Your Own Escargots pack is a way to get used to looking after snails while you are deciding whether to go for it in a bigger way.

A Smallholder pack is an ideal way to start seriously because it has lots of information about snail farming. If you want me to run a snail farming session for you then please ask.
